Power Struggle Erupts in MK Party as Mkhwebane Challenges Shivambu’s Leadership

A brewing conflict within the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has put former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane at odds with Secretary General Floyd Shivambu, threatening the party’s stability.

Mkhwebane, who joined the MKP after her removal from Parliament, is reportedly leading efforts to remove Shivambu from his leadership role. Party insiders say the dispute stems from ideological differences and dissatisfaction with Shivambu’s leadership style.

“Mkhwebane believes Shivambu’s approach goes against the party’s core values,” a senior MKP member said anonymously. Shivambu, a former EFF deputy president, helped shape the MKP’s early structure but has faced criticism for allegedly sidelining collective decision-making.

Some members accuse him of undermining the party’s grassroots principles, prompting discussions about a potential leadership challenge at an upcoming National Executive Committee meeting. Neither Mkhwebane nor Shivambu has publicly commented on the rift.

Political analysts warn the conflict could weaken the MKP, which gained surprising support in the 2024 elections. “This isn’t just about individuals—it’s about the party’s identity,” said political analyst Susan Booysen.

As tensions escalate, the MKP faces a crucial test of unity. The outcome could shape the party’s future and determine whether it maintains its momentum in South African politics.
