Police Commissioner Facing Arrest Over Suspicious Property Deals

Authorities are close to arresting National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola over allegations of improper property acquisitions worth millions of rand. The case revolves around properties bought during his leadership of the South African Police Service (SAPS), which reportedly bypassed standard procurement rules.

Sources within the justice system say a case file recommending charges has been sent to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). The properties in question, acquired between 2022 and 2023, cost taxpayers over R90 million. Investigations by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Hawks found irregularities, including inflated prices, lack of competitive bidding, and involvement of politically connected intermediaries.

The case comes as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government intensifies efforts to tackle corruption. Civil society groups have welcomed the possible legal action, stressing that no official should be above the law. Karam Singh of Corruption Watch stated, “Public trust in SAPS depends on honest and transparent leadership.”

Masemola, who took over as commissioner in 2022, was expected to restore integrity to the police force. His potential arrest could undermine these efforts. While he has not publicly commented, sources suggest he may challenge the investigation in court, citing procedural flaws.

The NPA has received the case file but has not yet decided on prosecution. NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said, “We are reviewing the evidence and will decide in due course.” If charged and convicted, Masemola could face criminal penalties and removal from office, worsening leadership instability in South Africa’s security sector.
