SuperSport United fans have feared this day since rumors first emerged in late 2024. The club, known as Matsatsantsa a Pitori, will no longer exist after being sold to new owners.

Reports of financial difficulties have followed the Multichoice-owned team for years. Now, according to well-known South African sports journalist Robert Marawa, the club has been sold for R50 million to a young businessman from Bloemfontein.

The new owners will rename the team Celtic United, as the original Bloemfontein Celtic name is not available. Marawa shared the news on social media, stating: “Bloemfontein Celtic is back in the Premiership next season. The status of SuperSport United has been bought by a young Bloemfontein businessman for R50 million. The club will operate as Celtic United.”

SuperSport United’s Legacy

Originally known as Pretoria City, the club was purchased by Multichoice in 1994 and rebranded as SuperSport United. Under their ownership, the team became known for stability, professionalism, and strong youth development.

They won three South African league titles under coach Gavin Hunt. The club also claimed several domestic cups, including the MTN8 in 2017 and 2019, as well as the Nedbank Cup in 2012, 2016, and 2017 under former coach Stuart Baxter.

SuperSport United also made a mark in African football, reaching the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2017 under coach Eric Tinkler. Now, after nearly three decades, the club’s name and identity will change as new ownership takes over.
