E-hailing giant Bolt has issued a statement following reports that popular YouTuber Simthande Myeza was allegedly kidnapped while using its service in Durban. The company expressed deep concern over the incident and pledged full cooperation with authorities.

Lerato Motsoeneng, Bolt South Africa’s Senior General Manager, called the allegations “deeply disturbing” and confirmed the company’s safety team has contacted Myeza for details. “We’re verifying trip information and will engage all relevant parties to ensure a thorough investigation,” Motsoeneng stated, emphasizing that rider safety remains Bolt’s top priority.

According to Myeza’s family, the comedian is now safe and recovering. They allege the Bolt driver deviated from the correct route before two armed accomplices abducted Myeza.

The kidnappers reportedly:

  • Transported him to an unknown location

  • Forced him to empty his bank accounts

  • Demanded ransom from family and friends

  • Took compromising photos/videos under duress

Umbilo police have confirmed an active kidnapping investigation. Colonel Robert Netshiunda, KZN police spokesperson, stated authorities are pursuing the case but couldn’t provide further details as the investigation continues.

Bolt maintains it will “act decisively” once all facts are verified and continues working with law enforcement. The incident has reignited discussions about e-hailing safety measures, with Bolt reiterating its commitment to “ensuring every ride remains a trusted experience.”

Myeza’s family has requested privacy as they focus on his recovery, letting legal processes unfold. The case highlights ongoing security concerns in South Africa’s ride-hailing industry following similar past incidents.
