President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially requested a comprehensive report from Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Nobuhle Nkabane, following her controversial and disruptive behavior during a parliamentary session last week. The incident has intensified public scrutiny of the African National Congress (ANC), further shaking the party’s already fragile public image.

The confrontation, which unfolded during a heated sitting of the National Assembly, has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread debate and criticism. According to multiple witnesses, Nkabane became visibly agitated when opposition Members of Parliament questioned the government’s handling of energy procurement and the ongoing challenges facing Eskom.

In response, the Deputy Minister allegedly launched into a combative verbal outburst, accusing MPs of spreading misinformation and deliberately undermining the government’s achievements. Her comments reportedly defied standard parliamentary procedure, leading Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to intervene with a stern warning. Instead of complying, Nkabane is said to have left the chamber in protest, escalating tensions and drawing strong condemnation from various quarters.

Reacting to the fallout, President Ramaphosa confirmed during a media briefing that he is awaiting a written explanation from Nkabane. Emphasizing the importance of accountability in public office, he stated:

“Accountability and respect for parliamentary processes are non-negotiable. As public representatives, we must uphold the dignity of our democratic institutions at all times.”

Political commentators suggest that the President’s demand for a report may signal possible disciplinary action. Some speculate that Nkabane could be suspended or even dismissed, depending on the findings of the inquiry.

Analysts argue that the incident underscores deeper issues within the ANC, including rising internal divisions and weakened cohesion within the party’s leadership. With the 2026 national elections approaching, the ANC faces growing pressure to project unity and integrity, both internally and to the public.

Public reaction has been swift and passionate. The hashtag #NkabaneMustFall began trending shortly after footage of the altercation surfaced, with many South Africans calling for her immediate resignation. Others have commended Ramaphosa for taking decisive action and encouraged him to enforce higher standards of conduct within his Cabinet.

The controversy also raises broader concerns about the level of decorum in Parliament and the growing frustration among citizens over political accountability. As the country awaits Nkabane’s formal response, attention now turns to how the President will handle the matter — and whether party loyalty will once again override public demands for consequences.

For now, the ANC faces yet another reputational challenge, one that could have lasting implications if not addressed with transparency and resolve.
