Podcast and Chill’s Sol Phenduka Shuts Down Critics Over His Car Choice

Popular broadcaster and Podcast and Chill co-host Sol Phenduka has responded to online comments mocking his choice of car after his co-host, MacG, was spotted driving a luxury Mercedes-Benz convertible valued at around R2.5 million.

The discussion started over the weekend when photos of MacG (real name MacG Mukwevho) in the high-end Mercedes made the rounds on social media, drawing reactions from fans of the podcast, known as the “Chillers.” One user, @properous_mpho, stirred controversy by tweeting: “Lmao and Sol drives a Kia? Diabolical.”

Phenduka, known for his sharp wit, quickly fired back: “How are you going to make this about me and what I drive? I’m very happy with my ride.” Reports indicate that Phenduka owns a Kia Sportage GT Line, a practical and well-equipped SUV priced at approximately R730,000—significantly more modest than MacG’s flashy Mercedes but still a reliable and stylish vehicle.

Many fans rallied behind Phenduka, criticizing the obsession with material possessions and social media comparisons.

User @Mzansi_Observer commented: “People get so obsessed with defining a person by what they have—what car they drive—as if we all wake up for the same thing each morning. It’s sad that our lives are dominated by consumerism and comparing liabilities.”

Another supporter, @BulawayoForever, defended Phenduka’s financial decisions, suggesting he’s focused on long-term success: “Sol is pulling big moves investment-wise, don’t undermine Phenduka.”

Meanwhile, @_2020Virgin questioned the original jab with: “What’s diabolical about driving a Kia?”

While some fans asked to see Phenduka’s car, others urged the Chillers to focus on the podcast’s content and the duo’s chemistry rather than their personal assets.

The debate highlights the ongoing conversation around celebrity culture in South Africa, where success is often equated with luxury cars and designer brands. However, Phenduka remains unbothered—happy with his career and his Kia.
