ANC’s Mokonyane: South Africa Won’t Change Laws for Elon Musk or Any Individual

ANC First Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane has firmly stated that South Africa will not adjust its laws to accommodate individuals based on their prominence or wealth, following recent discussions about billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s relationship with the country.

Speaking at Luthuli House on Friday, Mokonyane emphasized that South Africa’s legal and constitutional frameworks apply equally to all, regardless of status. “Our Constitution binds everyone within our borders—whether they were born here, live here temporarily, or are permanent residents,” she said. “We cannot and will not amend laws to suit Elon Musk or anyone else.”

Her remarks come amid growing online debates about whether South Africa should offer Musk—the South African-born CEO of Tesla and SpaceX—special incentives to invest in the country. Proponents argue his involvement could boost innovation and employment, while critics warn against setting a dangerous precedent that favors the wealthy over legal equality.

“Elon Musk is welcome to invest like any other businessperson, as long as he complies with existing regulations,” Mokonyane said. “We recognize his global success, but that doesn’t justify exceptions to our laws.”

Political analysts view Mokonyane’s statement as a strong defense of national sovereignty, particularly as the ANC seeks to attract foreign investment while maintaining legal consistency.

“The ANC supports partnerships that benefit South Africans,” Mokonyane added, “but not at the expense of the rule of law. No one is above it.”

The discussion highlights ongoing tensions between economic opportunities and constitutional principles, with the government signaling its commitment to balancing both as the country navigates complex economic challenges.
