Kaizer Chiefs Begin Squad Revamp After Disappointing Season

Kaizer Chiefs have initiated plans for a major squad rebuild ahead of the off-season, with at least one trialist already undergoing evaluation at their Naturena headquarters.

The storied Soweto club has endured a difficult 2024/25 Premiership campaign, sitting ninth in the standings with only two matches remaining. Their unexpected struggle to secure a Top Eight finish has accelerated the club’s transfer plans, with technical staff identifying squad depth as a critical weakness.

24-year-old defender Mhleli Mabuza has emerged as the first potential recruit, currently training with the team. The right-back, a product of KwaZulu-Natal Academy like recent signing Thabo Cele, spent most of his career in Portugal’s lower divisions before becoming a free agent. His availability presents a cost-effective option for Chiefs, who have long sought to strengthen their defensive flanks.

The club had previously shown interest in Richards Bay’s Lwandile Mabuya, though negotiations proved difficult. This latest trial signals Chiefs’ determination to address their defensive needs ahead of next season.

With an expected squad overhaul underway, several players face uncertain futures at Naturena. Happy Mashiane, Ranga Chivaviro, and Zitha Kwinika are among those rumored to be potential departures as the club looks to refresh its roster.

Despite the early transfer activity, coach Nasreddine Nabi remains focused on securing a MTN8 qualification spot in the remaining fixtures. The coming months promise significant changes for Amakhosi as they attempt to restore their competitive edge after a below-par campaign.
