ANC Faction Pushes Back Against DA in Government of National Unity

A growing rift has emerged within South Africa’s governing alliance as ANC parliamentarians voice strong objections to their partnership with the Democratic Alliance in the Government of National Unity. Multiple sources confirm that a significant faction within the ruling party has directly challenged Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula to reconsider the arrangement, citing fundamental disagreements over governance approaches.

Key Points of Contention:

  • Power Dynamics: ANC MPs accuse the DA of overstepping its role by attempting to control key decision-making processes

  • Policy Direction: Concerns raised about the DA’s alleged unilateral approach to policy formulation without proper consultation

  • Coalition Viability: Questions about whether the current structure serves the GNU’s original purpose of national unity

Behind Closed Doors:
During tense internal discussions this week, several ANC representatives reportedly characterized the relationship as increasingly untenable. “The DA operates as if they won the election,” one MP asserted. “Their constant attempts to undermine ANC-led initiatives contradict the very concept of unity government.”

The friction has become particularly acute around:

  1. Ministerial portfolio allocations

  2. Control of parliamentary oversight committees

  3. Fundamental policy differences on economic transformation

Political Calculus:
With the ANC’s National Executive Committee preparing to review the GNU arrangement, three potential paths have emerged:

  • Continue with current DA partnership under renegotiated terms

  • Shift toward alliances with smaller parties like IFP or PA

  • Attempt to govern through minority administration

What’s Next:
Political analysts suggest the coming fortnight will prove decisive, as both parties face pressure from their respective bases. While Mbalula continues advocating for compromise, the ANC’s labor and left-wing allies have grown increasingly vocal in their opposition to the DA partnership.

The situation presents a critical test for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership, with the stability of South Africa’s unprecedented unity government hanging in the balance. As one senior ANC figure cautioned: “We must decide whether this marriage of convenience is still convenient—or whether it’s becoming politically toxic.”
