Tensions are rising as families affected by the mysterious events surrounding the Hennops River tragedy accuse the South African Police Service (SAPS) of fabricating information and covering up the truth.

One family member, speaking anonymously for fear of retaliation, questioned the credibility of the SAPS version of events, pointing out that residents living near the river have not reported hearing or seeing any signs of an accident.

“There are people who live right next to that river. If something serious happened there, how come no one saw anything? No screams, no car in the water, no splashes, no chaos. It’s suspicious,” the relative said.

Their concerns are echoed by others who believe the police are “cooking lies” instead of being transparent. This growing mistrust has led to increased public scrutiny, with community members gathering at the river in recent days to demand answers and accountability.

The SAPS has stated that their investigation is ongoing, but families argue there is a clear disconnect between the police’s claims and the absence of local witnesses.

“These families are not stupid,” said another relative. “They see through the staged reports and contradictions. If SAPS has nothing to hide, why are there so many gaps in their statements?”

Efforts to obtain detailed comments from the SAPS spokesperson were unsuccessful at the time of publication. However, a brief statement released earlier this week insisted that “all procedures were followed” and that “speculation will only interfere with the investigation.”

For the families, however, silence and deflection are no longer acceptable. They are calling for independent oversight and community involvement to uncover the full story behind what really happened at Hennops River.

As pressure mounts, the spotlight is now on SAPS not only to provide answers but to restore public trust, which appears to be quickly eroding.

“We want the truth, not excuses,” the family member emphasized.
