Helen Zille Calls GNU Talks with ANC “Constructive” — Game-Changer or Political Sellout?

Zille Warns Ramaphosa: Removing DA Ministers Over Budget Vote Will Collapse GNU

In a twist that’s sending shockwaves through South African politics, Democratic Alliance Federal Chair Helen Zille has called her party’s Government of National Unity (GNU) talks with the African National Congress “constructive.” Just like that, the country’s political ground has shifted — and everyone’s talking.

For years, the DA has taken the ANC head-on — criticizing everything from Eskom’s collapse and State Capture to poor service delivery and infrastructure failure. Now, after a single meeting, the tone has changed — and South Africans are asking: Is the DA changing course?

“The talks were robust and constructive, with a focus on the future of South Africa,” Zille said in a post-meeting statement. It sounds optimistic. But what does “constructive” really mean when your negotiating partner is the party you’ve spent decades opposing?

The reaction has been fierce.

Online, hashtags like #DAANC, #GNUSellout, and #ZilleMoves are trending. Some say this could be a masterstroke of political maturity. Others are calling it betrayal.

“How do you work with the very people you’ve accused of destroying the country?” asked one user on Twitter, a sentiment echoed across social media.

But with coalition politics becoming the new norm in South Africa, the DA might be playing the long game — seeking to influence the direction of the country from inside the tent, rather than shouting from the outside.

Strategic move or sellout?

Critics argue that any partnership with the ANC risks watering down the DA’s identity and credibility. Supporters believe it’s a bold step towards national unity and stability in a fractured political environment.

Either way, this could mark the beginning of a whole new political chapter.

Zille’s words aren’t just political niceties — they could signal the start of a dramatic power shift.

Now the big question is: Will South Africans accept this new political marriage? Or will the backlash be too strong to ignore?

Let’s hear it from you.
