Johannesburg Mayor Faces Backlash Over Foreign Nationals Proposal for Metro Police

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero is facing mounting criticism following his proposal to recruit foreign nationals into the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) as language interpreters during crime prevention operations. The suggestion, made at an ANC meeting, sparked immediate backlash, leading to a public outcry and calls for his removal.

A video of Morero’s remarks went viral, prompting an **online petition** demanding his resignation. Within a short period, the petition had already gathered over 10,000 signatures, reflecting widespread public dissatisfaction. Many critics argue that, with high unemployment rates in South Africa, job opportunities should be prioritized for **local citizens**, particularly in law enforcement.

In response to the controversy, Mayor Morero issued a public apology, clarifying that his proposal was not intended to sideline South African job seekers but to enhance law enforcement efficiency by addressing language barriers. However, the apology has done little to calm the backlash, as concerns over employment priorities and national security remain at the forefront of public debate.

Opposition parties have also entered the fray, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus in Johannesburg cautioning against hasty calls for Morero’s removal. While acknowledging the problematic nature of his statement, the DA urged for policy discussions rather than immediate leadership changes.

Despite the public uproar, the ANC’s provincial task team (PTT) has expressed full support for Morero. Hope Papo, the PTT coordinator, reaffirmed that the mayor has the backing of the ANC’s leadership, signaling that the party is not considering his removal at this stage.

The debate over Morero’s proposal underscores broader tensions in South Africa regarding employment policies, immigration, and governance, making this a politically sensitive issue ahead of the 2024 elections. The question now is whether this controversy will impact public trust in the ANC’s leadership in Johannesburg, or if Morero can successfully weather the storm.
