Five Suspected Criminals Killed in Shootout with KZN Police in Ntuzuma

The number of suspected criminals killed in a shootout with KwaZulu-Natal police in Ntuzuma, Durban, has risen to five. The incident occurred on Sunday night, 23 February 2025, when police intercepted the suspects, who were allegedly on their way to commit a business robbery in the nearby township of KwaMashu.

According to reports, police acted on intelligence about an unconfirmed number of suspects traveling in two vehicles. The suspects’ vehicles were parked at the corner of Mdubu and Melusi streets, where an altercation broke out among the suspects, leading to shots being fired. Police stumbled upon the scene, and the suspects reportedly turned their guns on the officers, prompting a shootout.

During the exchange of gunfire, four suspects were fatally wounded. A subsequent search of the area led to the discovery of a fifth suspect who had attempted to flee but succumbed to gunshot wounds. Police recovered three firearms from the suspects, and no officers were injured during the incident.

Two additional suspects, who were injured during the initial altercation among the group, were later located at a hospital. Authorities are currently searching for one suspect who managed to evade arrest.

The shootout highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating violent crime in the region. KwaZulu-Natal has seen a surge in criminal activity, particularly business robberies, prompting increased police operations to address the issue.

As the investigation continues, police have urged the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspect. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by both law enforcement and communities in the fight against crime.
