Tragedy Strikes as Fire at Prince Mshiyeni Hospital Claims One Life, Leaves Others Injured

A devastating fire broke out in the psychiatric ward (C6) of Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Umlazi, Durban, resulting in the death of one patient and leaving several others injured. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety protocols and infrastructure at the troubled hospital.

Preliminary reports suggest that the fire was caused by a mentally unstable patient who allegedly smoked in a room containing oxygen. The flames quickly spread, destroying most of the beds and equipment in the ward. A source who witnessed the incident described the chaotic evacuation process, highlighting the lack of water as a major hindrance to containing the fire. This comes despite repeated claims by the ANC-run eThekwini municipality that water services had been restored.

The Public Servant Association (PSA) has called for an urgent investigation into the incident. The union is demanding that the Department of Health enforce strict no-smoking policies and enhance security measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital, which has been plagued by infrastructure issues and resource shortages. The lack of water during the emergency has further exposed the municipality’s failure to address critical service delivery problems.

As the community mourns the loss of life and prays for the recovery of the injured, questions are being raised about the adequacy of safety measures in public healthcare facilities. The Department of Health and local authorities are under increasing pressure to take immediate action to prevent such incidents from recurring and to ensure the safety of both patients and staff.
