Minister of Defence Angie Motshekga recently addressed Parliament to respond to questions about the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). With confidence, Motshekga reassured the nation that the country’s security is in capable hands, highlighting the professionalism and dedication of South African soldiers participating in the mission.

The SANDF has been involved in peacekeeping operations in the DRC for several years as part of United Nations and African Union initiatives to stabilize the region. During the session, Members of Parliament raised concerns about the safety of troops deployed in the conflict zone, the effectiveness of the mission, and its implications for South Africa’s foreign policy.

In her response, Motshekga emphasized the critical role of the SANDF in promoting regional stability, noting that the mission is crucial to supporting peace efforts and protecting civilians in the DRC. While acknowledging the inherent risks, she expressed full confidence in the skills and preparedness of the SANDF members. “The country is safe in the hands of our members,” Motshekga stated, reinforcing her trust in South Africa’s military forces.

She assured MPs that the government closely monitors the situation to prioritize the safety and well-being of deployed soldiers. Continuous evaluation and support ensure that operations are carried out in accordance with both national and international standards.

Motshekga’s comments reflect the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and security on the African continent while balancing national interests and international responsibilities. Although the mission in the DRC remains a subject of debate, the Minister’s remarks served as a firm reminder of South Africa’s ongoing role in fostering stability and peace in the region.
