ANC Open to Welcoming Former EFF Leader Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, Says Mbalula

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has hinted at the possibility of inviting former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP and founding member Mbuyiseni Ndlozi to join the ANC. The suggestion, which has sparked widespread public and political interest, underscores the ANC’s efforts to strengthen its ranks ahead of the crucial 2026 elections.

Speaking during a recent engagement, Mbalula remarked on the potential collaboration, stating:
“Nothing bad can really be said about the ANC or anyone speaking to Mbuyiseni. I don’t know if he has left the EFF, but he has left Parliament. If he decides to leave his party, why not speak to him about joining the ANC?”

Ndlozi, renowned for his eloquence and strong appeal to younger voters, was instrumental in shaping the EFF’s identity. However, since stepping down from Parliament, he has remained largely absent from public political discourse, fueling speculation about his alignment with the EFF and his future career direction.

ANC’s Strategy to Attract Influential Leaders

Mbalula’s comments reflect the ANC’s interest in leveraging Ndlozi’s influence and leadership qualities. A figure like Ndlozi, who resonates deeply with younger and progressive voters, could enhance the ANC’s appeal to demographics increasingly disillusioned with traditional political structures.

Political analysts have weighed in on the matter, with some viewing this as a calculated move by the ANC to regain dominance by integrating prominent leaders from rival parties. Others caution that such a shift could spark controversy, especially among EFF supporters, who might perceive Ndlozi’s potential defection as a betrayal.

Broader Implications for South African Politics

The potential overture to Ndlozi also highlights a growing trend of fluid political affiliations in South Africa. In recent years, the nation’s political landscape has witnessed an increase in party-hopping and the formation of new alliances as politicians explore different platforms to advance their visions.

For the ANC, securing a figure like Ndlozi would signal a commitment to revitalizing its leadership and reaching out to younger, more diverse constituencies. However, whether Ndlozi will entertain such overtures remains uncertain. Ndlozi has not yet publicly addressed Mbalula’s remarks, leaving room for widespread speculation. Some observers believe he may be reflecting on his political journey, while others suggest he might be stepping away from active politics altogether. The possibility of Ndlozi joining the ANC has sparked significant public interest, particularly among younger South Africans who admired his passionate and fiery approach during his time with the EFF.

As South Africa approaches the pivotal 2026 elections, the ANC’s strategy to bolster its ranks with high-profile figures like Ndlozi could have far-reaching implications for the country’s political landscape. Whether or not Ndlozi ultimately joins the ANC, the prospect of his return to the political forefront has reignited debates about leadership, loyalty, and the evolving dynamics of South African politics.
