The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party has announced the resignation of its treasurer-general, Dr. Thanti Mthanti, who has stepped down from his role citing professional commitments.

Dr. Mthanti, who was appointed to the position just a month and a half ago, tendered his resignation to party leader Jacob Zuma earlier this week. MK party spokesperson Sipho Tyira confirmed that Zuma has “magnanimously” accepted Mthanti’s resignation, which is effective immediately.

“His decision to step down has been made after careful reflection and in consideration of his personal and professional commitments,” said Tyira.

Dr. Mthanti has been a significant figure within the party since its inception, serving in various capacities, including Convenor of the National High Command deployees to the Western Cape and Chair of the Communications Sub-committee.

Acknowledgment and Transition

Tyira added that Zuma extended his “deepest appreciation” for Mthanti’s contributions to the party.

“His offer to assist in ensuring a seamless transition speaks volumes about his dedication to the continued success of the party. He will remain a valued member of the National High Command as the president continues to assign him various advisory tasks, including helping to set up financial control systems,” Tyira said.

The party is now in the process of identifying a suitable candidate to fill this key role.

A History of Changes

The position of treasurer-general has seen several changes within the MK party in recent months.

In July, Zuma dismissed then-treasurer-general Danisa Zulu from her role, a decision that coincided with the resignation of secretary-general Arthur Zwane, who reportedly stepped down under pressure.

Following Zulu’s departure, Zuma appointed Menzi Magubane to the role, only for him to be replaced by Dr. Mthanti shortly thereafter.

Moving Forward

The party has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a smooth leadership transition and maintaining its operations despite these changes. Observers are keenly watching how the MK party navigates these shifts in leadership as it continues to solidify its standing on the political stage.
