Jacob Zuma’s Strategy to Regain Influence Over ANC Unveiled

Jacob Zuma, former president of the African National Congress (ANC) and current leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), is allegedly orchestrating a calculated strategy to regain influence over the ANC, according to political analyst Sandile Swana.

In a recent interview, Swana outlined what he described as a deliberate campaign by Zuma to destabilize the ruling party. Central to this strategy are Zuma’s ongoing legal efforts to reinstate his ANC membership and the MKP’s recruitment of prominent former ANC members.

Leveraging Discontent Within the ANC

Swana suggested that Zuma is capitalizing on internal dissatisfaction within the ANC, particularly among members disillusioned with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership. Zuma’s MKP, Swana argued, is serving as a platform for those alienated by the ANC to rally under his leadership.

Notable figures such as former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane and former Economic Freedom Fighters chairperson Dali Mpofu have reportedly joined the MKP, signaling a targeted recruitment effort aimed at disenchanted ANC members and others frustrated by internal party conflicts.

Reinstating ANC Membership: A Strategic Move

Zuma’s appeal to reinstate his ANC membership, suspended last year, is seen as a pivotal part of his plan. Swana noted that regaining membership would provide Zuma with a foothold to influence ANC policies and leadership decisions.

“By re-entering the ANC, Zuma could potentially undermine Ramaphosa’s administration from within, leveraging his substantial support base to sway key decisions,” Swana explained.

ANC Dismisses but Analysts Warn

While the ANC has largely dismissed Zuma’s actions as desperate attempts to remain politically relevant, Swana cautioned against underestimating Zuma’s enduring influence. In strongholds such as KwaZulu-Natal, Zuma continues to enjoy significant backing from ANC members.

“His moves could deepen existing divisions within the ANC as it prepares for the 2024 general elections,” Swana added.

A Dual Threat to the ANC

Zuma’s MKP poses a dual challenge to the ANC: siphoning off dissatisfied members while forcing the party to confront unresolved internal tensions. This reflects a broader struggle for the political and ideological future of the ANC.

The Road Ahead

Despite uncertainties surrounding the success of Zuma’s strategy, his maneuvers underscore his ability to reshape South Africa’s political landscape, even from outside the ANC. As the MKP gains traction, the ANC faces mounting pressure to address internal rifts and prevent further fragmentation ahead of critical elections.
