Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has dismissed Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi from his role as Zulu prime minister and KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC.

The king announced the decision in a letter addressed to the Zulu nation on December 25, stating that Buthelezi’s dismissal was effective immediately.

Official Statement

“Today, I address you with a heavy heart as I announce my withdrawal with immediate effect of the name of Rev. Thulasizwe Dominic Buthelezi (MPL) from this esteemed position,” King Misuzulu wrote.

The king explained that the reasons for Buthelezi’s removal would be shared with traditional leaders and the Zulu nation after the conclusion of the uMkhosi ceremonies, which will run until the end of January 2025.

Significance of the Role

Emphasizing the importance of the prime ministerial role, the king described it as a position of “unwavering service to the throne and the nation,” deeply rooted in tradition, wisdom, and the unity of the Zulu kingdom.

“It is a role steeped in tradition, wisdom, and a commitment to the well-being and unity of the Zulu kingdom,” he added.

Moving Forward

The king called on the Zulu nation to rally behind the process of selecting Buthelezi’s successor, someone who will “carry forward the torch of leadership.” He reaffirmed the monarchy’s commitment to upholding the sacred values and traditions of the Zulu people.

Buthelezi had been appointed earlier this year during the commemoration of the Battle of Isandlwana in Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal. His tenure followed the passing of the previous Zulu prime minister and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) founder, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who had served for decades before his death on September 9, 2023, at the age of 95.

Legacy of Mangosuthu Buthelezi

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, a veteran politician and Zulu prince, dedicated his life to serving the monarchy and the Zulu nation. His extraordinary legacy spanned three reigns, making his shoes difficult to fill for his successors.

The dismissal of Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi marks a significant development in the leadership of the Zulu kingdom, as the process to appoint a new prime minister begins.
