KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane has issued a stern appeal to older men who exploit young girls, urging them to cease their harmful behavior. Her remarks follow reports of teenage girls, aged 15 to 18, giving birth on Christmas Day, with the fathers of the babies ranging between 19 and 23 years old.

Speaking during a Christmas media briefing, Simelane highlighted teenage pregnancy as a critical social concern in the province, one that impacts not only the young mothers but also their communities.

“This problem robs young girls of their childhood, forcing them into adulthood prematurely,” Simelane stated. “Teen pregnancies jeopardize the lives of young mothers and place their babies at significant risk. This is unacceptable, and as a society, we must fight against it.”

On Christmas Day, 47 babies were delivered in KwaZulu-Natal—26 girls and 21 boys. While celebrating the safe deliveries, Simelane emphasized the need for a collective effort to address the underlying issue of teenage pregnancy.

The Role of Communities and Parents

Simelane called on communities to take an active role in supporting young people and preventing early pregnancies. “This is not just the government’s responsibility. Communities must step up,” she said.

She also underscored the importance of parental guidance. “Parents need to have honest conversations about relationships, family planning, and life choices with their children. Don’t let social media or peers take over that role, as it often leads to costly mistakes.”

Contraceptive Stigma and Empowerment

Addressing the stigma surrounding contraceptive use, Simelane urged a shift in societal attitudes. “Contraceptives are tools of empowerment, not shame. Parents and community members must work together to end this stigma.”

She acknowledged the discomfort some parents feel when discussing sensitive topics like contraception but encouraged them to seek help. “Our healthcare facilities have nurses who are willing to talk to young women and children. Parents can accompany their children if they feel unsure about navigating these discussions.”

Supportive Environments for Children

Simelane stressed the importance of creating a loving and supportive environment for every child. “Unplanned and unwanted pregnancies often lead to lifelong challenges for both the child and the parent. Every child deserves to be born into a nurturing environment.”

The MEC’s call for action aims to foster greater accountability and collaboration among parents, communities, and healthcare providers to combat teenage pregnancies and ensure better futures for young girls and their children.
