Lesufi’s Arrogance and ANC Pressure: Will His Political Future Survive?

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s political standing is on shaky ground as mounting pressure from the ANC threatens his future. His arrogance, which might have once seemed like an indestructible shield, may now be his undoing, with the performance of his provincial executive committee (PEC) hanging over him like a sword of Damocles.

Despite his outward confidence, Lesufi’s fate is far from secure. If political hubris could offer protection, Lesufi would be untouchable. But as the ANC’s national working committee considers disbanding both the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal PECs for their poor performance in the May elections, Lesufi’s arrogance may be his greatest vulnerability.

Poor Results: The Catalyst for Change

The decision to place the Gauteng and KZN PECs under scrutiny comes after the ANC’s disappointing results in the 2024 elections, with support in Gauteng – once a stronghold – dwindling significantly. In KZN, the ANC faced fierce competition from parties like the IFP and MK, where ethnic politics still hold sway. The poor showing in these key provinces is the primary reason for the looming axe over Lesufi’s leadership.

Despite this, there are those who argue that Lesufi’s refusal to collaborate with the ANC’s new partner, the DA, and his opposition to the government of national unity could position him as a political martyr. This defiance aligns with the discomfort many ANC leaders still feel toward their alliance with the DA, an organization they once viewed as an enemy.

A Possible Political Escape?

Lesufi’s detractors paint a portrait of a leader fighting for his political soul. However, there may be some hope for him outside the ANC fold. If the worst happens and his PEC is dissolved, he could pivot to MK and continue advocating for his pro-poor agenda. However, such a move would not be without complications, as MK already has its own power struggles and internal challenges.

Lesufi’s Step Forward

For now, Lesufi is treading a fine line. His political future is far from secure, and any misstep could lead to his downfall. Despite the national ANC’s track record of wavering leadership, there is a real possibility that the Gauteng Premier’s fate could soon be sealed—unless he can navigate the storm brewing around him. For Lesufi, the next few weeks could determine whether his political career survives or collapses under the weight of his arrogance.
