ANC Rejects National Shutdown Calls as Mbalula Backs Ramaphosa Amid Outcry Over Nigeria Trade Policy

The ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, has dismissed growing calls for a national shutdown demanding President Cyril Ramaphosa’s resignation. The calls emerged after public backlash over the president’s recent decision to strengthen trade relations with Nigeria.

Ramaphosa announced a five-year multiple-entry visa for qualifying Nigerian businesses to facilitate trade, a move that sparked criticism from detractors accusing him of neglecting South Africa’s interests.

Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, Mbalula denounced the shutdown campaign, labeling it a “failed attempt to sow chaos.” He criticized the movement’s organizers, calling them “opportunists without a vision for building South Africa.”

“These opportunists have no plan for building South Africa, only destruction. To our people, we say: reject these distractions and remain focused on rebuilding our communities and creating opportunities for all,” said Mbalula.

The ANC remains steadfast in its mission to defend the nation’s sovereignty and promote inclusive growth. Mbalula emphasized the party’s commitment to creating a nonracial, non-sexist democracy while uplifting South Africans.

“We are here to lead, and we will not falter in this responsibility. We will not betray our values, principles, or the vision of a better life for all,” he stated.

Mbalula also expressed the party’s unwavering support for Ramaphosa, reaffirming trust in his leadership and condemning attempts to undermine him.

“Our democratically elected president, Cyril Ramaphosa, remains our president and will be defended. The people shall govern. An attack on Ramaphosa is an attack on the ANC,” said Mbalula.

The ANC reiterated its commitment to fostering global partnerships, particularly with African nations, highlighting shared developmental goals rooted in mutual growth and prosperity.

Mbalula called for unity and focus as the ANC continues its efforts to address South Africa’s pressing challenges, urging citizens to reject divisive tactics aimed at destabilizing the nation.
