An Eastern Cape woman, Shayhieda Dollie, 49, of Gelvandale in Gqeberha, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for orchestrating the murder of her son, Moegamat Thaafir Dollie, to cash in on a R2 million life insurance policy.

Moegamat, 22, was found dead on October 28, 2024, with gunshot wounds to his head and body. Police investigations revealed that his mother had plotted his murder due to ongoing conflicts linked to his struggles with drug addiction, which she found disruptive at home.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Dollie collaborated with two individuals, “Shaun” and “Oompie,” to hire hitmen for the murder. Initially, the fee was set at R80,000, but Dollie’s delays inflated the amount to R380,000.

Luxolo Tyali, the provincial NPA spokesperson, explained how the plan unfolded: “Dollie tricked her son by telling him he had a job interview. The hired perpetrators picked him up and carried out the murder.”

Related Case: Insurance Fraud Murder Conspiracy

In another case of insurance fraud, siblings Wanda Mbele, 34, and Sindiswa Mbele, 36, are facing charges of fraud and money laundering. They allegedly orchestrated the murders of David Manuel, an actor in Noem My Skollie, and his friend Alfonso Fisher on October 8 to claim more than R100,000 in insurance payouts.

The State claims the siblings also targeted Manuel’s brother, Patrick, and a neighbor, Sakhumzi Mantashe, in an effort to increase their insurance benefits. However, investigations have been hindered by difficulties in locating key witnesses.

Both cases highlight the alarming rise in life insurance fraud involving murder, with authorities vowing to clamp down on such schemes. Legal experts and social commentators have called for stricter oversight in the life insurance industry to prevent similar tragedies.
