Fiery Clash Between Speaker Nontembeko Boyce and MK Party MPL Phumlani Mfeka in KwaZulu-Natal Legislature

A dramatic confrontation unfolded in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature on Thursday when Speaker Nontembeko Boyce clashed with MK Party Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL), Induna Phumlani Mfeka, following a controversial remark directed at MEC Mbali Shinga. The altercation unfolded during a debate session when Mfeka, known for his bold statements, criticized Shinga’s performance and, in a pointed remark, questioned her character.

While Mfeka’s critique of Shinga’s professional duties was in line with standard legislative discourse, his comment about her character drew immediate backlash. Speaker Boyce intervened, demanding that Mfeka withdraw his statement, calling it “unparliamentary and disrespectful.” Mfeka, however, refused to comply, standing firm on his assertion and arguing that his statement was based on facts and that, as an MPL, he had the right to voice his opinion.

“I will not withdraw the truth,” Mfeka defiantly responded, prompting Boyce to reiterate the importance of maintaining decorum in the legislature. She reminded the MPLs of the need for respectful debate and warned against personal attacks.

The situation escalated when Mfeka accused Boyce of bias, claiming that the Speaker was unfairly protecting certain members while silencing others, particularly those from the MK Party. “You protect some members while silencing us,” he alleged, further intensifying the confrontation.

Boyce, visibly frustrated, maintained her position, asserting that the house had established rules that must be followed. She warned Mfeka of possible disciplinary action if he continued to disregard her directives.

After a brief adjournment to restore order, the session resumed, though the incident quickly became a hot topic on social media. Some praised Boyce for standing firm in enforcing the rules of the legislature, while others sympathized with Mfeka, defending his right to criticize public officials without fear of censorship.

The clash highlights the ongoing tensions in South African politics, especially within the legislative chambers, where the balance between free expression and maintaining decorum remains a contentious issue.
