ANC Member of Parliament Khusela Sangoni-Diko has urged an immediate overhaul of the State Security Agency (SSA), saying persistent weaknesses within the institution endanger South Africa’s stability and erode public trust.
Speaking at a session of Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on Intelligence, Sangoni-Diko said the SSA has suffered years of mismanagement, politicisation, and poor oversight. “The rot in the agency is deep-rooted and demands complete restructuring,” she said, warning that minor reforms will not solve the crisis.
Her comments come as Parliament reviews testimony from security leaders, including Lt. Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who highlighted coordination challenges between intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
Sangoni-Diko emphasized that accountability and professionalism are vital to restoring credibility in state security institutions. The committee will submit its reform recommendations to Parliament in the coming weeks.
