Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Member of Parliament Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has reportedly been barred from attending the party’s upcoming elective conference, sparking speculation about internal power struggles within the organization. The conference, scheduled for next month, is seen as pivotal ahead of South Africa’s 2024 general elections.

Strategic Move or Suppression?

Sources close to the party, as reported by Sunday World, claim that Ndlozi’s exclusion is a calculated effort to prevent him from vying for the position of Deputy President. Senior leaders within the EFF reportedly fear that Ndlozi could attract significant support from delegates, potentially disrupting the party’s preferred leadership succession plan.

Ndlozi, a founding member and former national spokesperson of the EFF, is a popular figure within the party, known for his intellectual rigor and passionate advocacy. His absence from the conference could have a substantial impact, given his considerable following among party members and supporters.

Leadership Dynamics Under Scrutiny

Political analysts suggest that Ndlozi’s exclusion reflects broader tensions within the EFF’s leadership as the party seeks to consolidate power and present a united front ahead of the elections. Political commentator Ralph Mathekga remarked, “The EFF is known for its centralized leadership style. Ndlozi’s exclusion may signal concerns about maintaining cohesion and avoiding leadership battles that could weaken the party’s position before 2024.”

An anonymous senior party insider supported this view, stating, “There are fears that allowing Ndlozi to participate could disrupt the carefully curated leadership slate. This decision was made to safeguard the party’s stability.”

Mixed Reactions

The decision has drawn varied reactions from EFF members and political observers. While some view it as a pragmatic step to prevent divisions, others criticize it as a suppression of internal democracy. Ndlozi himself has yet to comment on the matter, leaving room for further speculation.

Impact on the EFF’s Future

The elective conference is expected to shape the EFF’s strategy for the general elections, where it aims to solidify its position as South Africa’s third-largest political force. However, the move to exclude Ndlozi risks alienating sections of the party’s base and raising questions about transparency and fairness in its internal processes.

Whether Ndlozi’s exclusion will ensure the desired stability or provoke further dissent within the EFF remains to be seen. For now, the spotlight is on the party’s leadership and its ability to navigate these internal challenges while preparing for a critical electoral battle.
