EFF Faces Turmoil as Senior Leaders Exit Amid Leadership Crisis

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is grappling with a deepening internal crisis, marked by key resignations and growing dissent against Julius Malema’s leadership. The latest blow comes from Alfred Motsi, a founding member and the first Provincial Convenor of the North West, who has officially resigned and joined the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP).

Motsi, a key architect of the EFF during its formative years, delivered a stinging critique of the party, declaring, “The EFF is now a dead party.” His exit comes at a critical time as the party prepares for its National People’s Assembly, a pivotal gathering aimed at solidifying its leadership and strategic direction. Motsi’s resignation highlights the escalating dissatisfaction among senior members regarding the party’s trajectory under Malema.

Duduzile Zuma Adds to EFF’s Woes

Compounding the turmoil, former president Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma, has emerged as a sharp critic of Malema’s leadership. Aligning with EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu, Duduzile accused Malema of betraying the party’s founding principles.

In a scathing statement, she warned of a calculated effort to disrupt the party, stating, “We will make them feel the pain for a long time. We still have multiple moles in the EFF who will cause chaos at the People’s Assembly then resign.” Her remarks have fueled speculation about internal sabotage, further destabilizing the party as it faces increasing external scrutiny and internal discontent.

A Party at a Crossroads

The EFF’s struggles come at a time when its national influence and unity are being tested. The departure of high-profile leaders, combined with allegations of factionalism, threatens to undermine the party’s preparations for the National People’s Assembly.

As figures like Alfred Motsi pivot to alternative platforms such as the MKP, the EFF risks losing both its founding members and its ideological cohesion. The tension between Malema’s loyalists and disenchanted leaders signals a possible realignment within South Africa’s political landscape.

Future Implications

The internal strife raises critical questions about the EFF’s ability to maintain its relevance and mobilize support. With key figures openly challenging Malema and defecting to rival parties, the road ahead appears fraught with challenges.

Should the party fail to address these divisions, it may face a diminished role in South African politics, paving the way for alternative movements like the MKP to fill the void.
