The Pretoria High Court has convicted Sibusiso Mahlangu (34) and Lerato Mahlangu (33) of premeditated murder and fraud in a case that shocked the nation with its cold-blooded planning and deception. The couple from Soshanguve orchestrated a gruesome plot to murder Lerato’s former partner, Sibusiso Sithebe, in a bid to commit insurance fraud.

On January 2, 2022, the Mahlangu couple lured Sithebe to their home under false pretenses. Once there, they murdered him and dressed his body in Sibusiso Mahlangu’s clothing and wedding ring. To cover their tracks, they set Sithebe’s body ablaze, rendering it unidentifiable. Lerato Mahlangu then claimed to have found her “husband’s” charred remains after returning from KwaMhlanga. She later falsely identified the body as that of Sibusiso Mahlangu.

Shortly after the murder, Lerato, an Old Mutual sales consultant, filed fraudulent insurance claims totaling R575,000. However, their meticulously crafted plan began to unravel in April 2023 when Sibusiso Mahlangu was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. During routine checks, authorities discovered that Mahlangu had been officially declared deceased.

Further investigations uncovered the truth behind the crime. Key evidence included testimony from Sibusiso Mahlangu’s mother, who revealed that COVID-19 funeral restrictions had prevented the family from viewing the body, which they believed to be Sibusiso’s at the time.

The court condemned the couple’s actions, labeling the crime as “callous and calculated.” Judge remarks highlighted their greed and disregard for human life, emphasizing the emotional devastation inflicted on the victim’s family.

“This was a premeditated and heinous act motivated purely by financial greed,” the judge stated during the proceedings.

Community members and the victim’s family expressed relief at the verdict but remain deeply scarred by the crime’s brutality. “We are glad justice has been served, but no sentence can bring back the life of our loved one,” said a grieving relative.

The case has ignited discussions around the need for stricter verification processes in the insurance industry to prevent similar fraudulent activities. Sentencing is expected soon, with harsh penalties anticipated to reflect the severity of the crimes.
