Jacob Zuma Criticized for Shifting Blame on Legal Bill to Late Advocate

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has come under fire after suggesting that his late corruption trial advocate should be held responsible for the R28.9 million legal fees that state officials have been ordered to recover from him. This move, seen by many as an attempt to divert accountability, has sparked widespread criticism across the legal and political landscape. Zuma, whose legal battles have spanned over a decade, has been embroiled in various corruption allegations linked to the arms deal scandal. The state covered his legal expenses during these trials, a decision that was later overturned by the courts, mandating him to repay the substantial sum.

In a recent statement, Zuma suggested that the late Advocate Kemp J. Kemp SC, who represented him in numerous court appearances, played a pivotal role in decisions that ultimately led to the accumulation of his legal bills. Zuma’s comments implied that Kemp, as his advocate, should bear some of the responsibility for the massive legal costs now facing him. However, legal experts and political commentators have swiftly condemned Zuma’s statement, labeling it as an unfounded attempt to deflect accountability. Legal analyst Advocate Thandeka Dlamini noted, An advocate operates under the instruction of their client. Zuma, as the client, had the final say in his legal strategies. To shift the blame to a deceased legal professional is disingenuous and lacks legal merit.

Zuma’s remarks have also stirred controversy within political circles. The Democratic Alliance (DA), which has long campaigned for the recovery of Zuma’s legal fees, issued a statement condemning the former president’s actions. “Zuma’s latest attempt to avoid repaying the taxpayers is another example of his disregard for accountability. Blaming his late advocate is both disgraceful and legally baseless, said DA leader John Steenhuisen.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) has remained relatively silent on the matter, with some members distancing themselves from Zuma’s claims. However, factions within the party aligned with Zuma continue to express support for him, adding another layer of division to the already fractured political landscape. As the state pushes forward with efforts to reclaim the R28.9 million, Zuma’s latest defense strategy appears unlikely to hold water, with legal professionals warning that he may soon face intensified pressure to settle his debts.
