Ramaphosa Proposes Government of National Unity for eThekwini Amid Calls for Stability

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged political leaders in eThekwini to adopt a Government of National Unity (GNU), calling for collaborative governance to stabilize one of South Africa’s key metropolitan areas. Facing ongoing political infighting, deteriorating infrastructure, and sluggish economic growth, the city’s future, he emphasized, requires a unified approach to tackle its challenges effectively.

Ramaphosa’s Vision for Collaborative Leadership
During a meeting with stakeholders in Durban, Ramaphosa stressed the necessity of collective leadership to address eThekwini’s governance and economic hurdles.

“A Government of National Unity is not merely a political arrangement but a commitment to the people of eThekwini,” said the president. He outlined how a GNU could foster stability, streamline decision-making, and attract much-needed investments to rejuvenate the city’s economy.

Business Community Welcomes the Proposal
Local business leaders have rallied behind the idea, viewing it as a practical solution to the city’s persistent instability. Themba Khumalo, a prominent business executive in KwaZulu-Natal, highlighted the urgency of unified leadership, stating, “Our economy cannot thrive when political discord delays critical projects and reforms. A unified approach is essential to restore investor confidence.”

Business stakeholders have long criticized the impact of political turbulence on infrastructure development and economic progress, with many seeing the GNU as a viable path to restore functionality and growth.

Opposition Voices Concerns
Not everyone supports the proposal. Critics argue that a GNU could dilute accountability, entrench bureaucratic inefficiencies, and slow down the implementation of urgent reforms. Opposition leaders caution that such arrangements may hinder transformative policy-making by fostering compromise over decisive action.

Proponents counter that the benefits of unity far outweigh these risks, asserting that eThekwini’s challenges require collective problem-solving to rebuild public trust and spur recovery.

A Broader Strategy for South African Municipalities
The proposal aligns with the African National Congress’s (ANC) broader efforts to address governance issues in municipalities nationwide. With service delivery crises and economic stagnation impacting urban areas across South Africa, the GNU model is being considered as a potential solution for other troubled municipalities.

If successful in eThekwini, the GNU could set a precedent for collaborative governance in South Africa, demonstrating an inclusive approach to overcoming political and economic challenges.

Conclusion
As eThekwini faces a critical juncture, Ramaphosa’s call for a Government of National Unity reflects the urgent need for stability and cooperation. While debates continue over its practicality, the proposal underscores a growing consensus that unity in leadership may be the key to unlocking the city’s—and South Africa’s—potential for sustainable growth and recovery.
