ANC Defends Ramaphosa as Phala Phala Impeachment Threat Looms Amid Political Tensions

  • ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula dismissed an independent panel’s findings suggesting President Cyril Ramaphosa could face impeachment over the Phala Phala farm break-in, arguing that the panel relied on politically motivated claims by Arthur Fraser.
  • Ramaphosa denies any wrongdoing, asserting the funds were legitimate business proceeds. Mbalula’s defense highlights the ANC’s support for Ramaphosa amid calls from opposition parties and some public figures for transparency.
  • Mbalula’s comments aim to shield the ANC from political damage ahead of the 2024 elections, as the party contends with declining support due to corruption scandals and economic issues. Opposition parties, however, continue to press for accountability.

The findings of an independent parliamentary commission suggesting President Cyril Ramaphosa could face impeachment over the controversial Phala Phala farm break-in have been strongly dismissed by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula. In a statement, Mbalula criticized the panel, chaired by retired Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo, for relying on allegations by former intelligence chief Arthur Fraser, whom he accused of propagating “fanciful theories.” Fraser’s accusations initiated the inquiry, alleging that Ramaphosa concealed the theft of substantial foreign currency from his private farm in 2020 to avoid scrutiny.

The panel’s December 2022 report found prima facie evidence that Ramaphosa may have violated constitutional provisions concerning the break-in. However, Mbalula contends that the panel erred in treating Fraser’s claims as credible, asserting that they were politically motivated and lacked factual backing. “We cannot build a democracy on unsubstantiated, fantastical theories,” Mbalula stated, warning that the report’s findings could jeopardize democratic institutions by validating baseless claims.

Ramaphosa has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that the funds in question were legitimate business proceeds. The ANC’s firm defense, voiced by Mbalula, reflects the party’s continued support for Ramaphosa despite criticism from opposition parties and public calls for accountability regarding the Phala Phala incident. Opposition groups, including the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters, argue that full transparency is essential to preserve public trust, regardless of Fraser’s motivations.

Political analysts interpret Mbalula’s statements as a strategic move to mitigate the ANC’s political risks ahead of the challenging 2024 election season. With support for the party waning due to corruption scandals, economic woes, and service delivery issues, Mbalula’s remarks underscore the ANC’s efforts to maintain unity and retain public confidence. Meanwhile, opposition parties remain steadfast in their demands for a thorough investigation, underlining the ANC’s balancing act as it navigates the storm surrounding Phala Phala and works to retain its position in South African politics.
