This look was reminiscent of the ensemble worn by American rapper Doja Cat at the Global Citizen Festival earlier this year. Although Doja Cat was not born in South Africa, she has Zulu heritage through her father, Dumisani Dlamini, and frequently embraces her cultural roots.
Dlamini shared her look on Instagram, describing her opening ensemble as a tribute to South Africa. “Proudly South African,” she wrote. “My opening look was inspired by Doja Cat, and my hair was inspired by the iconic #BoomShaka who ruled the 90s with this hairstyle and music,” giving special mention to South African icons Thembi Seete and Lebo Mathosa, members of the legendary ’90s group Boom Shaka.

In honour of the, ‘PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN’ theme, Minnie was dressed by local fashion designer Asanfa Madyibi.
Boom Shaka member and actress Thembi Seete wrote: “Ndlovukazi, Congratulations on the job; well done! You looked amazing, and we are proud of you. Well done, Queen!”
