Sibusiso Zitha, the suspect accused of murdering celebrated pastry chef Thembekile Letlape, appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday as his bail application nears judgment. Letlape was found dead on May 30 at Zitha’s residence in Fourways, Johannesburg, leading to Zitha’s incarceration since June.

Zitha recently appealed to the court, requesting release on bail to manage his business affairs and ensure his children’s welfare during his imprisonment. In his affidavit, he expressed a desire to plead guilty, stating, “I am guilty of the crime, and I am aware of the sentence that this court can impose on me.” He also assured the court that he posed no threat to public safety, emphasizing his self-surrender to authorities shortly after the incident.

Zitha, the CEO of eKhaya Property Finance, argued that his continued detention would significantly impact his family and business. He admitted that at the time of the crime, he was under the influence of cocaine, alcohol, and heavy stress, exacerbated by over 36 hours of sleep deprivation. However, he added, “This is, however, not an excuse for my actions.”

The state presented a new witness on Monday, though the testimony remains undisclosed per the court’s privacy application.

The court has set October 31 as the date for its decision on Zitha’s bail application, with Zitha expressing a willingness to face the consequences of his actions, should his request for temporary release be denied.
