EFF MP Revives Claims of IEC Bias Amid Allegations of ANC Campaign Presence

An Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Member of Parliament has renewed accusations of bias within South Africa’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) following reports that IEC officials were allegedly present at an African National Congress (ANC) campaign event. The EFF MP expressed frustration, asserting that this incident reinforces long-standing claims of IEC partiality in favor of the ruling ANC.

“When we say that the IEC of South Africa is captured, we are insulted and deemed unfair. Now, how do you explain this?” the MP stated, in response to reports suggesting IEC officials were seen at a venue where the ANC was mobilizing for the December by-elections across 12 wards.

The EFF has often criticized the IEC, claiming it favors the ANC and fails to operate independently. Previous allegations of IEC bias were met with skepticism, with some dismissing them as politically driven. However, the latest incident has reignited concerns over the commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.

The IEC, responsible for impartial election management, has yet to address these allegations. Meanwhile, political analysts caution that any perception of bias could undermine public trust in South Africa’s electoral process, potentially impacting voter confidence ahead of December’s by-elections.

The ANC, currently preparing for the upcoming vote, has also not issued a response to the EFF’s claims. With the elections approaching, tensions are likely to rise as parties, including the EFF, call for transparency and accountability from the IEC.
