The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have officially lodged a complaint against Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, with the Registrar of the Ethics and Members’ Interests Committee. The EFF accuses McKenzie of ethical violations, although specific details surrounding the allegations remain undisclosed.

This move comes amid growing tensions between the EFF and McKenzie, with party representatives expressing serious concerns about the minister’s conduct in office. Leigh-Ann Mathys, an EFF spokesperson, emphasized the party’s commitment to holding public officials accountable, stating, “The EFF will not tolerate any form of misconduct or failure to uphold the integrity of public office.”

McKenzie, a seasoned politician and businessman, has faced public scrutiny over various decisions during his tenure as minister. However, he has maintained his innocence, strongly denying any wrongdoing. In a brief statement responding to the EFF’s actions, McKenzie expressed confidence in being cleared by the Ethics Committee, urging the public not to rush to conclusions.

“We believe in the rule of law and due process,” McKenzie remarked. “I have always conducted myself in line with the values of public service.”

The Ethics and Members’ Interests Committee, tasked with upholding ethical standards among Members of Parliament, will review the complaint to determine whether an investigation is warranted. If an investigation proceeds, McKenzie could face sanctions if found guilty of any breaches.

The EFF’s formal complaint represents a significant escalation in its drive for transparency and accountability within government. This case could have far-reaching consequences for McKenzie’s political career and set a precedent for the conduct expected from public officeholders.

The Ethics Committee has yet to announce a timeline for its decision on whether to move forward with the investigation.
