In a notable shift towards engaging digital audiences, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has appointed prominent YouTuber and political commentator, Siyabonga Mkhwanazi, popularly known as Big Daddy Liberty, to a strategic role within his office. This appointment underscores the DA’s efforts to connect with new media influencers and grassroots communities, particularly ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Big Daddy Liberty has made a name for himself through his conservative-leaning YouTube channel, where he shares commentary on South African politics, economics, and social issues. His substantial online following, which includes many disillusioned by mainstream media and traditional political rhetoric, offers the DA access to a growing audience seeking alternative perspectives.

By bringing Mkhwanazi on board, Steenhuisen is aiming to bolster the party’s digital media strategy and strengthen its messaging efforts. In announcing the appointment, Steenhuisen praised Mkhwanazi’s work: “Siyabonga has been a powerful voice for many South Africans who are concerned about the direction of the country. His experience in engaging with the public through alternative media will be invaluable to the DA.”

Mkhwanazi’s role is expected to focus on advising on media strategy, public engagement, and community outreach, helping the DA to craft messages that resonate with broader and more diverse audiences. His appointment is a sign of the party’s evolving approach to campaigning, recognizing the importance of digital platforms in shaping political narratives in South Africa today.

This move reflects a broader trend in modern politics, where social media influencers and alternative media figures are playing increasingly influential roles in public discourse, especially as political parties seek to engage younger and more digitally active voters.
