The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have publicly accused Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, of dishonesty regarding his recent trip to the Paris Olympics. The accusations come amid growing concerns over government officials’ international travel expenses and the lack of transparency in such engagements.

In a statement, the EFF questioned the legitimacy of McKenzie’s claims that the visit was an official government trip aimed at promoting South African athletes and securing international partnerships. Instead, the party alleges that McKenzie’s trip was personal in nature and brought no substantial benefit to the country’s sporting community.

The EFF’s spokesperson stressed the importance of accountability, particularly in light of South Africa’s economic struggles. “We cannot allow ministers to misuse their positions under the guise of official duties,” the spokesperson said, demanding a detailed account of McKenzie’s expenses and meetings held during his visit.

McKenzie has refuted the accusations, maintaining that his trip was necessary for elevating South African sports on the global stage. He expressed disappointment with the EFF’s claims, describing them as politically motivated attacks.

This controversy raises broader questions about transparency and accountability in government, especially concerning public service expenditures. As calls for greater oversight continue, McKenzie’s Paris trip is likely to remain under the spotlight in the coming weeks.
