Pretoria, August 24, 2024 – Law enforcement agencies achieved a significant breakthrough in the fight against crime when they arrested three suspects involved in a series of online robberies and vehicle hijackings in Winterveld, Jikisi Stand, north of Pretoria. The arrests came after a meticulous tracing operation carried out by a specialized task team.

The suspects, who had been on the radar of the authorities for several weeks, were tracked down to a hideout in the Winterveld area. According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavuso, the operation was initiated following a string of incidents in which the suspects lured victims through online platforms, promising to sell various items at attractive prices. However, upon meeting the victims in isolated areas, the suspects would rob them at gunpoint, often leaving them stranded without their vehicles.

“These individuals have been operating with impunity for some time, preying on unsuspecting victims through online marketplaces. They would arrange meetings under the pretext of finalizing sales transactions, only to rob their victims of cash, cellphones, and in some cases, their vehicles,” said Lt. Col. Mavuso.

The breakthrough came after a victim, who had narrowly escaped an attempted hijacking, provided crucial information to the police. This led to the formation of a joint task team consisting of members from the Pretoria North Crime Intelligence Unit, the SAPS Tactical Response Team, and the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit. Through coordinated efforts, the task team was able to trace the suspects to a house in Jikisi Stand, where they were apprehended.

During the arrest, police recovered a stolen vehicle, several firearms, and electronic devices believed to have been used to facilitate the online robberies. The suspects, aged between 25 and 35, are currently in police custody and are expected to face multiple charges, including armed robbery, vehicle hijacking, and possession of unlicensed firearms.

The arrest of these suspects is a significant step towards curbing the rising trend of online-related crimes in the region. The police have urged the public to remain vigilant when engaging in online transactions and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
