A truck driver fatally shot a hijacker who attempted to commandeer his vehicle on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 PM, causing significant traffic disruption and raising concerns about the rising incidences of highway hijackings in the region.

According to eyewitnesses and initial police reports, the hijacker, armed with a handgun, approached the truck at a rest stop just off the highway. The truck driver, whose identity has been withheld for safety reasons, was resting in his cab when the hijacker forcefully opened the driver’s door and attempted to seize control of the vehicle.

The driver, however, was prepared. He quickly drew his own legally registered firearm and, after a brief struggle, managed to shoot the assailant. The hijacker sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical responders who arrived shortly after the altercation.

Lieutenant Colonel Sarah Mbele of the Heidelberg Police Department confirmed the details of the incident during a press briefing. “The truck driver acted in self-defense when confronted with a life-threatening situation. He managed to neutralize the threat, thereby protecting himself and potentially other road users,” Mbele stated.

The police are conducting a thorough investigation, including reviewing CCTV footage from the area and taking statements from witnesses. Preliminary findings suggest that the hijacker might have been part of a larger syndicate targeting trucks on the N3 corridor, a major route for freight transport in South Africa.

This incident underscores the growing threat of highway robberies and hijackings, prompting calls for increased security measures and more significant police presence along the N3. Trucking associations have long voiced concerns about the safety of their drivers and the need for more robust law enforcement efforts.

In the wake of the incident, the trucking community has expressed solidarity with the driver, praising his bravery. “Our drivers face immense risks daily, and this event highlights the urgent need for enhanced protective measures. We stand with our colleague and commend his courage in a perilous situation,” said Johan Smit, spokesperson for the South African Trucking Association.

The N3 highway remains a critical artery for commerce, and ensuring its safety is paramount. Authorities urge drivers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement promptly.
