South Africa was created by whites in 1910. They did everything to keep blacks as their servants and unequal to them and keep them in separate areas from them. 2 years after South Africa was created, ANC was formed to challenge the colonial government. But it 70 years for black to be free. In that 70 year period ANC was going everything it can to end apartheid.

It couldn’t work inside South Africa because it was dangerous, it have to rely on neighboring country. It found a Zimbabwean party called ZAPU led by Joshua Nkomo as ally. Mkhonto Wesizwe led by Chris Hani and Zapu fought against the Rhodesian government in the late 60s. Unfortunately, it is believed Robert Mugabe was never happy about the relationship of the ANC and his rival party, Zapu, a Ndebeles of Zimbabwe party.

Put South African first activist, Kwena Molekwa wrote on Twitter, “Infact Robert Mugabe had a deal with the apartheid regime to kill ANC freedom fighters, who were operating from within Zimbabwe. This sparked Gukurahundi as the ANC had a very good relationship with Zapu. The whole thing about dissidents was a cover-up. Robert Mugabe was a sellout. ”

This have upset some Shona people Zimbabweans who wants to blackmail ANC to keep them in South Africa saying they helped ANC people during the struggle. Mugabe said he was not member of the Frontline state. ZANU was not supporting the national struggle of black South Africans.
