Following criticism on social media, Sbusiso “DJ Sbu” Leope has spoken out over Zahara’s passing.
Bulelwa Mkutukana, also known as Zahara, passed away on Monday.
Her claims over allegedly owed royalties worth millions after leaving TS Records have since come to light, drawing attention to TK Nciza and DJ Sbu, who were the ones who found her in 2010.
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, DJ Sbu, who has been a popular figure on social media, gave an accurate account of the accusations made against Zahara.
We ensured that she publishes under her own name, which she does through Sheer publishing. Since we started working together, Sheer has been paying her publishing straight into her bank account. We also chose to have Universal Music, the company that now handles the distribution of our music repertoire, pay her directly. I would never intentionally hurt someone.
The well-known media figure, entrepreneur, and writer declared that he would always miss her and treasure the priceless moments they had together.
“I would like people to remember her as a cheerful, vibrant, and enjoyable person from the brief years I worked with her. She was kind, compassionate, and hilarious. The news that she passed away at such a young age was heartbreaking.”
Sbu expressed his grief to SABC News, saying he visited Zahara’s family to offer his condolences because he too was devastated by her passing.
Sbu stated that he is ready to absorb the hits in spite of his detractors.
“I was taken aback. Similar to everyone else, I was inconsolable. You go to her family’s house and pay your respects, just as you would in African customs and traditions. Regardless of what the general population may say. It’s possible that people are angry and want to point the finger at someone.
“A lot of people are blaming me,” Having spent so much time working in the public light, I understand even if I’m not. It’s acceptable to feel irate or depressed. Let’s be sad. Even though I’m grieving, a lot of people are also saying certain things on social media, which is acceptable. I will accept all of your messages and sorrows as your older brother. I recognize your anger.”
Sbu has insisted over the years that he never defrauded the singer of money.
