A Mamelodi Sundowns player has announced his retirement from football ahead of the upcoming season.

Goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene has hung up his gloves after spending a couple of years at Sundowns and won many major trophies with the club.

The veteran goalkeeper will form a part of Rulani Mokwena’s technical team at the club and will serve as a goalkeeper coach starting from the upcoming season

“Today, I announce the end of my playing career. Now I can’t wait to get started and really enjoy my other passion,” confirmed the goalkeeper.

Mweene is one of the players that have not seen much game time in the colours of the Brazilians in the recent seasons and things turned worse for the veteran goalkeeper last season following the arrival of Ronwen Williams to the club from rivals Supersport United.

Mweene has managed to win almost every trophy on offer with the Brazilians and he was also among of the squad that managed to win the continental tournament, CAF Champions League with Sundowns back in 2016.

The Zambian will be remembered as one of the most decorated players in the South African football after winning eight league titles, three Nedbank cups, two Telkom knockouts, one MTN8, one NFD title, one CAF Super Cup league, one CAF champions League and Africa Cup of Nations with his national team.

The veteran goalkeeper has served the Brazilian with dignity over the years he spent at the club and will also go down as a club legend.

He will leave the likes of Onyango and Williams competing for the number one spot at the club as the Brazilians will be expected to have a very busy campaigning in the upcoming season.

The club will also compete in the continental tournament CAF Champions League after winning the dstv Premiership title last season.
