The clock is ticking for the African National Congress (ANC) as the Democratic Alliance (DA) says it has until Wednesday to release its complete cadre deployment committee records to the official opposition. This follows last week’s judgment in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg dismissing the ANC’s bid to appeal an earlier ruling ordering it to hand over its records.

The DA initially lodged the application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) in February 2023. The party sought the records of the ANC’s cadre deployment committee, which is responsible for appointing party members to key positions in government and state-owned enterprises. The DA argues that the records will shed light on how the ANC has used cadre deployment to advance its own political interests at the expense of good governance. The party also believes that the records could help to identify those responsible for corruption and other malfeasance in the public sector.

The ANC has until Wednesday to hand over the records to the DA. If it fails to do so, it could face contempt of court proceedings. The DA’s victory in this case is a major blow to the ANC. It is the first time that the party has been forced to release its cadre deployment records. The DA is expected to make the records public once they have been received.

The release of the records could have a significant impact on South African politics. It could lead to further investigations into corruption and other malfeasance in the public sector. It could also damage the ANC’s reputation and make it more difficult for the party to win elections in the future. The DA’s victory in this case is a victory for transparency and accountability. It sends a clear message to the ANC that it cannot hide its wrongdoing from the public.
