Senzo Meyiwa trial has been postponed owing to Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela being unavailable. It is said that the judge is unwell and may not be able to continue with this trial due to his health.
It is alleged that judge Maumela may be off the Senzo Meyiwa trial permanently “for health reasons”. This was announced by State Advocate George Baloyi at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria this morning.
This is expected to see another lengthy postponement in this matter at a time many thought progress was being made. South Africans are now starting to lose hope on this trial. Many said this seems like justice is being denied to the family of Senzo Meyiwa.
It is not clear if its only the health of the judge which is making this case to be postponed again, or there is something happening.
According to the state advocate, continuing in front of a new judge, all the witnesses may need to be recalled to give evidence again. This delay is really starting to make South Africans lose trust in the country’s judicial system.
Senzo Meyiwa’s sister was in court today. She was seen sitting with a representative from AfriForum private prosecution unit. Those who expressed their disappointment in the further postponement of the Meyiwa trial said the state should really look into how they can speed up the process.
“Honestly this is pathetic… what happened to those talks about speedy trials? If this judge is going to be out permanently, then it is like music to my ears! The so called judge was so biased that he could not even hide it,” said a social critic.
“This case is now a waste of time and state resources to be honest. It is clear that Senzo Meyiwa’s family will never get justice,” others expressed their disappointment.
