Teachers, parents and members of the community gathered to bid farewell to one of the learners who died in a horrific accident which happened in the past week.
It was a sombre atmosphere, as the portrait of the deceased learner was displayed in the front. This is one of the most painful moments for any parent to bury their child.
A memorial service for one of the five learners killed in a car accident in Mitchell’s Plain last week, Katlego Banga, was held today. Teachers and pupils of Wespoort Primary school came in their numbers and packed the Portlands Indoor Centre to bid him farewell.
Five learners died when the bakkie transporting them to school rolled multiple times, two other pupils were injured and rushed to hospital. Katlego’s classmates performed a dance routine as a special tribute to him.

The family members of Katlego who were in attendance were visibly in pain. They were sitting in the front row as they were paying attention to the program.
The driver responsible for the crash appeared in court in the past week. It is alleged that he does not have a permit to transport the learners. Other drivers operating that business also revealed that they too do not have the permits, and are appealing for the department to resolve the matter.
