Five days have passed since a family in Nyakach lay seven of their members to rest in a ceremony that left them with anguish they will never be able to forget.

One may imagine the family’s emotional and psychological pains by observing all the new graves next to each other with wilting flowers. 7 family members perished in an accident. It only makes matters worse to consider that none of those who are currently shivering beneath the earthen mound left the same house in excellent health.

One of the grieving family members, Steve Ouko, spoke about the catastrophe that claimed the lives of seven members of the same family and one neighbor. On May 5, the tragic occurrence took place, leaving the entire area and nation in disbelief and sadness. It all began when the unfortunate Sigoti family from Nyakach chartered a bus from a nearby school to travel to Homa Bay for a funeral.

“Shortly past Kendu Bay, the driver tried to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle, causing the bus to roll before hitting sign posts and an electricity pole,” he claimed. Several survivors remain in hospitals. Seven people had already passed away before the debris was turned over, and one person who had survived had died while being treated at the hospital.

Of the 28 injured, some have been released from the hospital while others are still recovering there. “Six were buried in one ceremony, while one who was married elsewhere and buried in Seme was buried yesterday,” Ouko said. The bereaved relative stated that the deceased were essentially uncles and aunts from the same family because they had the same grandfather. Nancy Oloo, one of the other relatives, said that she had been unable to talk about the incident for days because it had left her so shocked.

“I heard on the radio and watched on TV till it came knocking on our door. The only consolation is that God is closing this door and opening others for wonderful things now, she said.
