The relationship between King Misuzulu and his traditional prime minister, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, was expected to sour further as the king forged ahead with the appointment of Inkosi Thanduyise Mzimela as the chairperson of the Ingonyama Trust Board.

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi is not happy with King Misuzulu. Mangosuthu says yesterday he met with the King after he announced Inkosi Thanduyise Mzimela as the next chairperson of the Ingonyama Trust Board. The prince says he expressed concerns about how the transition from Judge Jerome Ngwenya to Inkosi Mzimela was handled and “which created serious confusion and distress with the Zulu nation”. Buthelezi says he advised the King to take Zulu nation into his confidence on this matter through an imbizo. If the King fails to call it, he will be obliged to call it as traditional prime minister.

But it is the king’s sole mandate to nominate the chairperson of the board and, even if he had to consult anyone that did not mean that he could not appoint or nominate the chairperson if those consulted were against his choice.
