On Sunday morning, a Springs police constable, Kwanele Dunga, shot and killed his long-term girlfriend, Nompumelelo Hlatswayo, before turning the gun on himself. Their bodies were found in Dunga’s car with gunshot wounds to their necks. Witnesses reported that the couple had a fight at a tavern in Duduza, with the constable suspecting his girlfriend of cheating.

They were later seen leaving the tavern, with the officer forcing his girlfriend into his car before speeding off. The tragedy occurred in Pollak Park, Springs, where their bodies were discovered in Dunga’s car with damaged windows.

Nomthandazo Masikela, who witnessed the incident, was concerned that the couple was drunk and would cause an accident from the way they were driving. Shortly after, she heard two gunshots followed by silence. Upon investigation, they found the couple trapped in the car.

Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, Springs police spokesperson, confirmed that they are investigating the case as a murder-suicide, and the motive is still unknown.

The tragic event has left many in shock and disbelief. Dunga was a member of the South African Police Service, who took an oath to protect and serve the community. Instead, he committed a heinous crime, leaving behind a devastated family and a community mourning the loss of two lives. It is a reminder that domestic violence is a serious issue that affects many families, and we must do more to prevent it.

It is heartbreaking to think that a simple argument could lead to such a tragic outcome. Jealousy and violence should never be the solution to any problem. This incident is a clear indication of how emotions can take over, leading to irreversible consequences. We must learn to control our anger and seek help when necessary. The South African Police Service must also address the issue of domestic violence among their ranks and take steps to prevent such incidents from happening again.
