The charred body found in cell 35 at Mangaung Correctional Centre has been identified.
The body, found on 3 May 2022, was initially believed to be that of convicted murderer Thabo Bester.
According to police, DNA tests done in the wake of Bester’s escape and subsequent arrest linked the body with the deceased’s biological mother.
Police have notified the family.”As difficult as this news is, the SAPS is pleased to bring closure to the family,” police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe added.
Batho Mpholo confirmed to iReport South Africa the family were notified on Friday that the body was that of their son Katlego Bereng.
“I am broken. My heart is shattered into a million pieces. I cannot believe it, his mother Monica is devastated she can’t speak,” Mpholo said.
