Officers are authorized to inquire about the legal status of immigrants and request copies of their documents, without requiring them to carry them at all times. This access to the national registry 24/7 gives law enforcement the power to verify the status of foreign nationals.

However, the immigration system is facing several challenges, including a backlog of appeal applications submitted by individuals who have been denied refugee or asylum permits. Motsoaledi stressed the need to eliminate the “bureaucratic ladder of never-ending appeals,” which is being exploited by those who do not qualify for international protection.

To simplify the process and serve everyone better, the entire immigration system needs to be overhauled. The government is committed to rewriting the system to make it effective and efficient for all stakeholders.

In conclusion, Motsoaledi’s statements highlight the need for proper training and communication for law enforcement officers and the government’s commitment to overhauling the immigration system. These steps will help ensure a more streamlined and fair process for foreign individuals seeking asylum or refugee status in South Africa.
